Kitchen cabinets set the entire tone of the room, so when they start looking dated the instinct is to rip them out. Before you do, it's worth knowing that replacement is dramatically more expensive and more disruptive than refinishing — and in most kitchens, it isn't necessary.
The deciding factor is the condition of the cabinet boxes, not the doors. Open a cabinet and look at the carcass. Is it solid? Are the shelves flat and firm? Do the doors still hang square and close properly? Is the layout one you actually like? If the answer is yes, you have good bones, and painting will give you a completely different kitchen at a fraction of the cost.
Replacement makes more sense when the boxes themselves have failed — water damage under the sink that has swollen and delaminated the material, particle board that's crumbling, shelves that sag under normal weight, or doors that no longer sit square because the frames have shifted. It's also the right call when the layout itself is the problem, since paint can't move a cabinet run or add storage you don't have.
The reason refinishing has a bad reputation is that it's frequently done badly. Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking grease, and paint applied over that grease will peel off in strips within months. A proper job means removing every door and drawer front, taking off the hardware, degreasing every surface thoroughly, sanding to give the finish something to grip, applying a bonding primer made for slick surfaces, and then spraying the enamel rather than brushing it.
Spraying is what produces the smooth, factory-like surface people associate with new cabinets. Brushed cabinets show brush marks under kitchen lighting no matter how careful the painter is. The finish coat should also be a cabinet-grade enamel that cures hard, because kitchen doors get opened, bumped, and wiped down constantly.
The practical upside beyond cost is time. A cabinet refinish is measured in days rather than the weeks a full replacement takes, and you're not tearing out countertops or losing your kitchen entirely while you wait on a cabinet order.
